Interview Etiquette The Guide To Good Manners

Interview Etiquette The Guide To Good Manners Picture the scenario. You’re interviewing for your dream job, in a company where you have wanted to work for years. This is it, this is the pinnacle, the top of the mountain. You’ve nearly made it, and all you have to do is pass one little interview…It’s a shame you’re stuck in traffic. And that you forgot to charge your phone last night. And that your suit hasn’t been ironed, nor have your teeth been brushed. Oh well, you didn’t bother to research the company anyway. There’s always next time.Sound familiar? If you are guilty of even 1 of these mistakes, then this quick-fire blog on interview etiquette will be right up your street! For more top tips, check out our comprehensive interview skills guide!Quickfire Interview Etiquette Tips!Getting There On TimeThe first thing you need to make sure you do is to get to the interview on time. Or even better, ahead of time! Being late is one of the worst mistakes you can possibly make, and never looks good, even if it wasn’t your fault. The best way to avoid this is just to make sure that you leave home well ahead of schedule. If you’re driving, and get there early, just sit and wait in the car park for a while. Being late is terrible interview etiquette. When You ArriveOnce you’ve arrived, and met the person (people) who will be interviewing you, the first thing you should do is shake their hand. Don’t be a wet lettuce. Give a strong and firm handshake that says you are confident and in control. Look them in the eye. When considering interview etiquette, many people underestimate the power of their handshake and eye contact.Personal HygienePersonal hygiene is really important, and this extends to the way you dress too. These days, interviewers are far more liberal when it comes to interview etiquette and beards, but make sure your beard is well trimmed/kept. Try not to wear too much perfume or cologne, don’t smoke before the interview and avoid chewing gum. These are all fatal flaws which can m ake the difference between hiring and rejection. Oh, and dress smart! Don’t turn up in a tracksuit and expect to get the job. It’s true that interviewers are more accepting now of ‘smart casual’ interview attire, but this doesn’t mean you should dress sloppy.During The InterviewThe first rule of thumb is to try not to fidget, and don’t cross your arms either. This will make you seem defensive, which can be off-putting to the interviewer. When speaking, look directly at the person whom you are talking to and speak in a firm but clear voice. Use your body language to your advantage. Nodding and smiling shows clarification, and serves as a visual signal that you are listening to what is being said. Remember that it’s also okay to ask for clarification if you haven’t understood the question.Answering QuestionsThe questions themselves are an extra hurdle to overcome, and you need to prepare for them in advance. Don’t speak too quickly, as you need the interviewers to un derstand what you are saying! Speaking too quickly is a common sign of nerves. The interviews will know that you are nervous, and that’s okay, but they’ll also expect you to overcome the nerves. If you’ve prepared well for the questions before the interview, then you’ll already have a good idea of how you are going to answer; and this will make it much easier for you. Election 2016 Stressed Move to Canada, Work These Jobs

Election 2016 Stressed Move to Canada, Work These Jobs It seems like the 2016 election has everyone on edge. Though threatening to flee the country during an election year has become somewhat of a tradition in recent years, this particular election â€" between two wildly different candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump â€" has given those threats a tinge of seriousness. People are seriously thinking about moving to Canada if their candidate doesn’t win, and the numbers show that it may not be just hyperbole this time. According to data from job search site Monster, the number of Americans looking for jobs in Canada has spiked 58% over last year. “Between January and October of this year, Monster saw 30,296 job searches using the keyword ‘Canada’ on Monster’s U.S. website, which is a jump from the 19,693 in all of 2015,” a Monster rep told The Cheat Sheet. While these numbers are still relatively small, it does go to show that the 2016 election has people seriously considering some life-altering decisions in fear of the fallout. Move to Canada? Mull it Over, First Close Modal DialogThis is a modal window. This modal can be closed by pressing the Escape key or activating the close button. Of course, talk is cheap. People threaten to move to Canada every election year, and very few ever actually follow through. But again, this election seems different, and if Monster’s numbers are any indication, there may actually be a bigger migration north of the border in coming years than we’ve seen before. Keep in mind, however, that it may not be the best long-term move for most Americans. As far as the data on searches goes, Monster’s team said the majority of Americans looking for jobs in Canada are looking in Ontario, with Toronto being the most often-searched destination. Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver followed close behind. In terms of the types of jobs Americans are searching for, engineering jobs had the highest hits. That’s trailed by IT work and jobs in the financial industry. But when it comes to where the opportunity lies, Monster’s team ran down the top five jobs with the most openings (per its data) in Canada. If you truly plan to make a run for the border after the dust settles, these will probably be the easiest jobs to get. Read: Donald Trump’s Latest Tax Problem is More Common Than You Think 1. Retail Workers With 25,843 openings listed in Monster’s database, retail jobs present the most opportunity for American political refugees fleeing to Canada. These jobs can be challenging no matter where you’re living, as they’re commonly known to wear you down and often don’t pay extremely well. 2. Retail Management All those retail workers need management and supervision, and there are plenty of opportunities for that in Canada. Per Monster’s data, there are 12,926 openings for retail managers and supervisors across Canada. You’ll still be in the retail sector, which may not be thrilling, but if you’re looking to build your management experience, this could be a good route. 3. Truck Drivers With 13,002 openings, it’s clear that truck drivers are needed to transport cargo all across Canada. U.S. Census data has shown that truck drivers have one of the most common professions in the country, and given Canada’s similar layout â€" namely, sprawling geography ranging from the Pacific to the Atlantic â€" truckers are needed up north as well. Read: 5 Signs You Got the Job You Interviewed For 4. Sales Account Representatives Sales is a hot field in Canada, at least according to the Monster numbers. There are 12,411 openings for sales and account representatives, which may be an attractive field for those who wish to remain in the sales game, but don’t want to go into the retail sector. These jobs typically pay more as well. 5. Customer Information Reps Finally, customer and information representatives, with 11,696 openings, fills out the list. Essentially, these jobs require workers help customers. That can include walking them through product choices or fixing any issues with their purchases. If this sounds like it’s more up your alley than straight-up sales, there are jobs to be had.

It's like a hangover, the flu bug and food poisoning all wrapped up into one nasty feeling: The need to work with the people who fought against you. Both sides suffer this intense malady, which makes for a challenging road to effective collaboration. So, how do you deal with exhausting office politics? In a recent article I wrote for AOL Jobs, I provide three ways to handle this situation. READ THE FULL ARTICLE ? Image Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!

10 Tips To Make Life Easier As A Working Mom

10 Tips To Make Life Easier As A Working Mom First, its important to be honest Its rarely smooth or easy being a mom to two young kids as well as managing a startup. If I ever manage to make it look easy to do both, its becauseI love my work and my kids so much.Ive managed to build a good faade.Im a big proponent of shortcuts that make everything easier.Though Im notlage an authority on productivity, I have had a lot of practice at being productive under some pretty stressful and intense circumstances. And, if you are here reading this, it is likely because you have found yourself in some seriously stressful situations, yourself, and you want to learn a thing or two about managing that stress and holding onto any semblance of a work-life balance. So here are a few of the things that I do that personally allow me to maximize my time so my startup can be as successful as possible, while I am still able to continue being the mom I want to be for my children. No one ever said working paren thood would be easy especially for mothers who face a lot of discrimination in the workplace for having a life they need to balance. But there are ways to manage that life, and here is how I do it.What are 10 tips for juggling working motherhood?1. Write everything down, especially your to-do listIts possible that I never fully recovered from pregnancy brain, so I write everything down. Evernote is my savior. Every time I create a new note, I drop in lots of keywords so that later, when Im searching for the note, I can find it.Writing everything down helps me to keep track of what I need to get done for the day, week or even the month. I am able to refer to my notes whenever I am feeling scatterbrained, and I dont have to worry about ever forgetting anything, so long as it gets written down in those notes. I can also prioritize my to-do list so that I know what really needs to get done first, and I can tackle my list in that order.2. Make a schedule, and stick to it.Four words colo r-coded Google Calendar.I schedule everything. Time with my kids. Time for yoga. Time to work. I even build out my calendar with specific work tasks so I know what my hours are meant to accomplish.Scheduling helps me to understand where Im supposed to be, when and for how long. This way I can make the time to do everything I want (and need) to do and, when it feels like theres not enough hours in the day, I am able to schedule in different things throughout the week. For example, if I cant make it to yoga on Monday because I want to go to something with my children or because I have to stay late at work, and I know that in advance, Ill be aya to make the time for a yoga class on Tuesday when I have a little bit of an easier day.3. Do NOT clean your house. If you dont have the time to do it, or if you simply dont want to do it, you dont have to clean your own house. Yes, its 2019, and there are apps for that. Check out apps like Handy or TaskRabbit for help around the house. I also l ove TaskRabbit for small tasks that I dont have time for, such as taking things to be repaired, assembling furniture, etc.Similarly, I do all my shopping online. Its fast and easy, and you can do it at midnight if you need to.Its just not a high-value use of your precious time. Find someone else to clean.4. ExerciseEspecially if youre working long hours at a desk, its really essential to keep your body moving. Im increasingly convinced that exercise is great for your mind, as wellto say nothing of the long-term health benefits.I find that exercise helps me to keep calm and carry on, even when I have the most stressful work week and really dont feel like theres enough time to squeeze it in. When work and family get busy, its easy for exercise to be one of the first things to go. But dont let it. You have to take care of yourself. And, even if you just do a few minutes every day or week, its better than nothing.5. Sleep.I wasnt always this way, but I have become a big believer in the importance of sleep. Without getting good sleep, I cant be a good mother or good at my job. Its primary. So I try to make sure I get to bed at a reasonable time every night. And I love weekend naps. If I can squeeze one in while my daughter is also napping, it feels like Christmas.A wealth of scientific research supports this. Sleep is necessary to keep your body and your brain moving optimally. Without it, youre not going to be the best version of yourself, and its going to take a toll on your family life, as well as your career.6. Get a haircut on company time.In my corporate days, we used to joke about how you could tell when someone got a haircut on company time. But now I think its one of the smartest thing you can doespecially if youre a woman with high-maintenance (read graying) hair like me.Ive made my salon time some of my most productive by bringing my laptop and working away. Im pretty sure that my hairdresser thinks Im the most antisocial person on the planet, but weve co me to an understanding. You can do the same, or just schedule in some time to take off and treat yourself to a little self-care practice like this.7. Sorry, but work for two hours on Sunday.I wish it werent the case, but I feel like I have to set aside time on the weekend to catch up, organize and plan for the week ahead. It helps me a lot to do this, so that come Monday, I am not totally overwhelmed.I take care of small tasks that Ive pushed aside during the week, or projects that require less distraction.I try to make the work as unobtrusive to our family as possibleI do it while the kids are watching a movie or at a birthday party or with my mom. But I feel like these two hours are somehow worth 10 in terms of efficiency during the week.8. Stay connected to your friends. When youre constantly busyand scheduledit can be difficult to squeeze in time to see or talk to friends. But texting and social media make it so easy. It takes two seconds to shoot a text over to your friends. It w ill brighten their day, and their response will brighten yours. And make a plan to see themeven if its in three weeks Theyll make fun of you a little, but they wont mind. You can do this by adding it to your schedule (see no. 2). Just tell yourself that this is as necessary as getting your dry cleaning done, and youll make the time for it..9. Have fun.Make what youre doing fun. If its not, figure out something else fun to do. Life is too short. And its within your controlyou can make the fun. This doesnt necessarily mean quitting your job if you dont have fun all the time. It may mean incorporating things you love into your daily life, like going to your favorite lunch spot on your lunch hour or making friends with colleagues and going out for happy hour with them every once in a while. It may also mean quitting your job, however, and getting a new one that makes you a whole lot happier.10. Forgive yourself.I love that quote that says perfection is the enemy of good. Your expectations for yourself are the highest, so give yourself a break.Dont forget what really matters, which is probably your family above all. And make sure youre keeping your eye on the ball to take care of that. Everything else is just gravy. So dont be so tough on yourself when you inevitably make little mistakes, make poor decisions or even totally screw up. Youre only human. Just continue doing the best you can with what you have where you are, as thats all you can humanly do.
